We're back Iraq 2003 - t-shirt spam, see 2_publish

We're Back Iraq T-Shirts - now this really is pushing the whole Patriotism thing a little. I've been receiving multiple copies of a spam email selling Pro-USA T-Shirts on the Iraq issue.

The introduction to the email reads "Show Your American Patriotism & Support", and the shirts themselves have spar-spangled images and messages like "Were Back Iraq 2003" and "Game Over" (with a gunsight on Saddam) etc. The thing that amazes me is the friggin emails started arriving pretty much on the day of the invasion. Maybe the US govt is hoping to break into the tacky-clothing market.

"The midnight sky flashed an eerie blue early Thursday over four Midwestern states as a meteorite exploded in the atmosphere, sending rocks as big as softballs crashing through some houses.... Paul Sipiera, a professor of geology and astronomy at Harper College in Palatine, Ill., spent Thursday examining dozens of pieces of meteorites and plotting where they fell. The largest he saw was about 7 1/2 pounds. "For me, it's a dream come true," he said. "I always tell my wife that when I die, I hope I get hit in the head by a meteorite flying through the roof and it came pretty close," he said. --Associated Press, 27 March 2003 http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&cid=624&ncid=624&e=1&u=/ap/20030327/ap_on_sc/meteor_shower

Hamster Power http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=54821&cid=5366462 Hamsters need food, let say 10 kg a year per hamster and then we assume each hamster manages to generate 10W and that we need three shifts. That's 3 * 10 / 10 == 3 kg of salad per watt, now to get a terrawatt you'd need 3 * 1,000,000,000 kg of salad which is a lot. Not to mention that you'll need support hamsters to bread new hamsters for when the ones in the wheels drop dead. That alone would easily double, or maybe even triple the amount of salad needed for each watt. You might be able to justify some of the salad usage by using the droppings as fertilizer, but still ... I think you would - mildly put - dent the worlds food usage statistics.

John Robb's Radio Weblog In the modern world, the fluid of control is oil. Control the oil as oil supplies deplete, and you control the world. With 100,000 troops in Iraq on a permanent basis, the US would effectively control most of the oil in the world Do you know how the two-province system works? They used it in China. Say there are two provinces, A and B, and they're both having a famine. What you do is, you look at their records. If Province A has a record of cheating on its taxes or rioting, then you confiscate all the grain in Province A and ship it to B. If the records are about equal you pick at random. The result is that Province B is loyal forever, and Province A is wiped out so you don't worry about it

The asteroid, called 2002 AA29, is in a precise circular orbit that follows the same general path as the Earth around the Sun. But, like a mouse teasing a cat, the asteroid sometimes speeds up and precedes the Earth and then later slows to drop into a follow-the- leader approach. But the two will never meet, says Chodas. On Wednesday, the asteroid makes its closest approach to the Earth in almost a century, moving to within about six million kilometres. "For a number of decades, the asteroid has been going a little slower than the Earth and the Earth has been catching up," says Chodas. "This week, it makes its closest approach in 95 years."

His followers waited, in vain, until March 21, 1844, when Miller's deadline expired. However, some experts from the U.S. Arctic Research Commission, studying the polar ice caps, are now pointing out some of the advantageous side effects of global warming. Cruithne, as it is called, takes 770 years to complete a horseshoe-shaped orbit around Earth, the scientists say, and it will remain in a suspended state around Earth for at least 5,000 years.

I read about something called the "Nemesis Theory", by Richard Muller, which proposes that Sol is actually a binary star system (in which Sol B is called Nemesis or the Death Star ;-). Every 26 million years Nemesis passes through the Oort cloud and collects comets, some of which hit us. The evidence for this is the periodic drops in biodiversity (i.e. mass extinctions) that seem to occur every 26 million years (according to some paleontolists). However, we are between extinctions, and should be relatively trouble free for more than 10 million years.

In 1998, a judge stopped the release of The Devils Advocate for two days because a sculptor claimed his art was used in the background. Unfortunately, we forgot most of the units. For example, I can't recall what goes between ounces and gills, and I can't seem find it on the internet. 2 fluid ounces = 1 ??? = 2^1 fl.oz. 2 ???s = 1 gill = 2^2 fl.oz. 2 gills = 1 chopin (cup) = 2^3 fl.oz. 2 chopins (cups) = 1 pint = 2^4 fl.oz. 2 pints = 1 quart = 2^5 fl.oz. 2 quarts = 1 pottle = 2^6 fl.oz. 2 pottles = 1 gallon = 2^7 fl.oz. 2 gallons = 1 peck = 2^8 fl.oz. 2 pecks = 1 demibushel = 2^9 fl.oz. 2 demibushels = 1 bushel or firken = 2^10 fl.oz. 2 firkens = 1 kinderkin = 2^11 fl.oz. 2 kinderkins = 1 barrel = 2^12 fl.oz. 2 barrels = 1 hogshead = 2^13 fl.oz. 2 hogsheads = 1 pipe = 2^14 fl.oz. 2 pipes = 1 tun = 2^15 fl.oz.
