Plater first started racign in 1994 at Cadwell Park in the UK. He was a member of Team Kawasaki UK competing in the British Superbike season in 2000 managing a bunch of 5ths and 6ths and a seasons best 4th at Mallory and was teamed up with Peter Goddard and substitute riders Martin Craggill and Alex Gramigni.

In 2001 Plater was teamed up with Michael Rutter for a time as Transatlantic Finance Kawasaki taking 2nd placings in round 6 at Thruxton and round 5 at BRands, and 4th in round 1 at Donnington, with an crash injury forcing a two month rest early in the season. After the team withdrawl during the season he moved to Virgin Yamaha where he stayed for 2002.

For the 2005 BSB season Plater raced a ZX10 for the Kawasaki-Sendo Superbike Team and for 2006 signed with the Dienza Performance British Superbike Team also running Kawasaki ZX10s.

Steve competed as part of a three man team for Kawasaki France in the Le Mans 24 hour race in April 2006 but one of his team-mates crashed and the team were forced to retire. In May of 2006 he won both the NW200 Superbike races on the HM Plant Honda CBR1000RR.
