Amy X Neuburg (link)

Oh My Lord, Ricardo and I have just taken advantage of "cultural hour" here at work and gone along to a performance by Amy X Neuburg in the performing arts academy. Man .... What a mind-fuck !!! Her personal bio reads...

Amy X Neuburg composes and/or performs new music for voice and/or electronics in a variety of capacities from opera singer to rock band leader to cartoon composer. She is best known for her work with the electronic avant-cabaret ensemble Amy X Neuburg & Men and for her solo performances of original work for voice, electronics, and percussion.

The performance was basically her taking live samples of her own voice, looping them, layering more live and pre-recorded samples over the top and singing different harmonies, vocals, poetry and layers over whole shebang. Very bloody impressive. I wanted to jump up on stage and have a go, like everyone else in the crowd no doubt.

She's running a workshop tommorow at Waikato which would be great I'm sure, and looks like she's also playing at the Wellington Jazz Festival this weekend. Check out her list of gear...

  • DrumKat drum controller
  • Echoplex Loop IV
  • Yamaha Pro-1 digital mixer
  • Emu Proteus synth/sample unit
  • Alesis DM-Pro drum synth
  • and occasionally the ancient but inimitable Roland VP-70 harmonizer/pitch follower

If you're still following this then you must check out the mp3 audio samples collection, all about a minute and a half long. God, it'd be great shit for an alternative room at a dance-party, not quite chill-out material though.
