Monster washes up near Farewell Spit (link)

Anyone fancy some sunfish Sushi?  check this baby out ...

A 3m long sunfish has washed up at Taupata Creek near Puponga (Farewell Spit) and was discovered by passers-by on Sunday. Department of Conservation worker and Pakawau resident Heather Gunn said she was driving past when she saw "a big lump" on the beach, which she initially thought to be a whale.

I've seen these big fellahs in a few Jacques Cousteau like documentaries and they seem like such big gentle giants. Really upsetting to see one cast in a creek like this. I'm amazed the local chippie hadn't popped down to slice a few meaty steaks off to drop into the deep-fryer

Mola mola is the formal name for sunfish, they're the world’s largest known bony fish (sharks and rays are cartilaginous, not bony), they're found in all oceans in tropical and temperate climes, and they eat mostly jellyfish. Check out these beautiful photos taken by underwater photographer Phillip Colla
